Virginia State Mandates
Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS)
Federal Mandate: Medicare Part D Practitioners
In 2018 the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act was passed by the federal government. The Act includes legislation that requires Medicare Part D practitioners to begin electronically prescribing Part D drugs requiring prior authorization on January 1, 2021. Medicare Part D prescribers in every state are subject to the above stated mandate and must comply.
Virginia State Mandate: All Prescribers
In 2017 the state of Virginia passed legislation concerning opiate prescriptions as it relates to electronic prescribing. The legislation passed, Virginia House Bill 2165, established that beginning on July 1, 2020, prescriptions for controlled substances containing opiates must be electronically prescribed. Following July 1, 2020 pharmacists are absolutely prohibited from dispensing a controlled substance that contains an opiate unless the prescription is electronically prescribed.
