Scharmaine Lawson-Baker, Nurse Practitioner
House call provider, Scharmaine Lawson-Baker, uses an iPad and Practice Fusion to treat patients in New Orleans.
Experience using other EHR systems:
Scharmaine Baker, a Nurse Practitioner for Advanced Clinical Consultants, has traveled around the globe, providing care to patients in places such as Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Scharmaine realized the need for care was closer to home than she had thought. Scharmaine started her medical practice, traveling from home to home as a house-call provider in New Orleans.
Specializing in family medicine and geriatrics, Scharmaine spends half of her time in her clinic and the other half traveling to her patients- whether it’s in their own homes or in a FEMA trailer. She relies on Practice Fusion’s flexible, portable Electronic Health Record system to make her busy practice work.
On Being a Mobile Nurse Practitioner
“Practice Fusion has been a great asset to our company because I am able to be portable and mobile. If you’ve taken the time to not only come to their home to meet them but to also care for them and provide them with their medicines then you become in a sense engrained in the family unit.”
Using Secure Cloud-Based EMRs after Hurricane Katrina
“Medical records were gone, they really were. Even though we lost the building that we had just revived for the practice, I was able to still connect with some of my patients, and their family members and also connect with other healthcare providers who were caring for those patients and I wouldn’t be able to start if I didn’t have my information on my PDA. I love technology and I think that technology not only makes my job easier but it makes me more efficient.”
Practice Fusion’s Free Support:
“Initially I heard about Practice Fusion through a few colleagues. So I tried one patient and I said wow this actually works! Great service- when you call, someone answers and when you leave a message they call back. Or you can do the live chat over the internet and someone replies, you don’t get put in a queue.”
Patient Reaction to Practice Fusion
“The patients love it. It makes them come alive. They want to see what their last blood pressure was and their lab work. With technology, I am able to provide that information to them in real-time and they love it. I love it too because that helps them become a part of their healthcare and that’s what it’s all about, you want your patients to be partners in their healthcare and that’s priceless. It really has been a great asset to our company.”
