CRM Focuses on Healthcare
Under the new agreement, Practice Fusion's EMR (electronic medical records product line) will be combined with Salesforce.com's cloud computing system to enhance value for customers. We think the deal comes at an opportune moment because the federal government passed a bill earlier this year, including around $30.0 billion in incentives to medical practitioners and hospitals for buying and using electronic record keeping software. We believe this is likely to generate additional business for companies such as Salesforce.com, as most doctors currently use hard copies of medical records.

Practice Fusion EMR to Sit on Salesforce.com's Cloud
Today an agreement was announced with Salesforce.com investing in Practice Fusion, the free EMR that is supported by advertising. I remember back when the company started out, there were reservations, but it appears things are working well with e-prescribing even coming online next month. Profits of a million a year are not bad either.

Trends Update — Electronic Medical Records: Salesforce.com Clouds the EMR Field
The WSJ Health Blog notes today that Salesforce.com's investment in Practice Fusion, though not a large financial investment, follows an appealing trend in the EMR space. Both Salesforce.com and Practice Fusion are cloud computing plays (aka hosted services / ASP) where software and data live on company servers rather than on local PCs in doctors' offices. This will be particularly attractive for smaller practices without their own IT capabilities.

That doesn't faze Practice Fusion customer Dr. David Wyatt, an Atlanta physician whose three-office medical practice, Weight Loss MD, provides cash-only weight loss services to patients.
"We don't bill insurance companies, so I don't think we'd be eligible for the stimulus program anyway," he said. Wyatt, who's used Practice Fusion for two years, said it's as good as traditional EMR packages, especially since Practice Fusion recently added document scanning capabilities to its apps.
"I can customize the templates, and messaging is secure," Wyatt said. "And the software is free, you can't beat that."
