Meet the EHR Avatars
EHR users come in a wide variety of personalities: reluctants, techies, evangelists and more. Practice fusion has put together a humorous look at eight types of EHR users for our fans. Click on a character to learn more.
Which one are you?
Reluctant Dr. Ramon
Dr. Ramon is a family practice physician in sunny South Florida who has been charting with paper for over 20 years. He made the EMR switch reluctantly to prepare for selling his practice. With the help of his supportive staff and dictation software, he's pretty comfortable charting on a computer and really likes e-prescribing. Now that Dr. Ramon has tackled EMR adoption he's going to spend some time straightening out his golf swing.
Admin Alice
Admin Alice is the friendly front office manager for a pediatrician in Tucson, AZ. She greets patients with a smile, makes million calls and juggles patient charts all day long. As the practice transitions to a paperless system, Alice is gradually saying farewell with a smile to all those clipboards. Now she is becoming the practice's computer whiz and the go-to gal for tech questions.
Expert Dr. Esani MD, PhD
Dr. Esani MD, PhD is an expert surgeon and also teaches at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He uses an EHR in his own practice and at the hospital. Scholastic loves discussing health IT with his colleagues. Even the barista at his local gourmet coffee kiosk knows about EHRs. You can read about Esani's latest research on a variety of blogs or hear him speak at any ACS conference.
Skeptical Dr. Smith
Skeptical Dr. Smith owns a solo podiatry practice in Chicago that, at one point, possessed one of the largest filing cabinets in the Midwest. After hearing EHR horror stories from other doctors in the area, Dr. Smith was worried that making the switch to a paperless office was going to be a nightmare. But when he actually made the switch it was easy, cost-effective and increased productivity at his practice.
Managerial Mrs. Manila
Practice manager Mrs. Manila works for a successful ENT in Houston, TX. As the practice expands, her job is becoming increasingly difficult and she's researching new technology to help. A shrewd negotiator, she brings homemade banana bread into the office on days when she asks the boss for big changes such as IP phones or an EMR upgrade, and there is nary a crumb to be found by the end of the day.
Charting Chip
A nurse practicioner in San Mateo, CA, Techie Thomas has been proudly paperless for almost a year. He loves using his tablet to see patients on the go and is addicted to healthcare apps. He vaguely remembers using paper charts and tweets about the latest healthcare technology in between patients. Techie Thomas imagines a day when he can share patient charts with other doctors online.
Parental Dr. Patience
Parental Dr. Patience is a business-savvy physician and a busy mom in Trenton, NJ. She's always looking for new ways to cut costs and make her practice more efficient. Converting to an EHR has allowed her to start offering house calls and to hire a new medical assistant. She also has more time to spend preparing her kids' favorite meal: spaghetti and meatballs.
Evangelist Edwin
Evangelist Edwin is an EHR consultant and tech superstar who enjoys tweeting about everything from #EHR to #HIMSS. Edwin travels all around Michigan helping medical practices adopt EHR systems. He is excited to finally see the sector offering easy, affordable tech and gets his kicks saving practices money and enhancing charting with a streamlined EHR.
