Doing Extraordinary Things

by Andy Van Wart

Practice Fusion is pushing healthcare innovation forward. Because of this, everyone at the company is doing something extraordinary—everyone is an innovator. This is what provides the greatest source of satisfaction for me. Our EMR is literally saving lives. It is empowering doctors to deliver better care to their patients. It is reinventing healthcare in the United States.

I have been with Practice Fusion for one year now, and in that time I have learned more about web design and development than in the last 5 years combined. There is no substitute for industry experience at a fast-growing tech company. Practice Fusion also allows you to shape your own growth within the company. By merely making my wishes known I was able to shift from graphic production to web development. I have a passion for architecting the front-end pieces of web sites.

Collaboration is a cornerstone of our success at Practice Fusion, which is why it’s so important to embrace your team members. As a web developer I am constantly collaborating with colleagues from different departments. . Sometimes I am amazed at what can be accomplished when we all work in parallel.

I think a great example of this is our new Meaningful Use Center. This project was a huge team effort that involved weeks of planning and execution. Our Meaningful Use experts led the vision and wrote the copy. Our Marketing Communications Specialist created the tutorial videos. Our UX designers wireframed the new interface. Our Creative Lead designed the look and feel. Our Product Manager divided and organized our tasks. Then I built the actual framework and designed the functionality. We all had to embrace each other’s strengths in order to build something that was greater than each of our individual abilities alone, and the result is a highly praised educational resource for our users that gets hundreds of page views each day.

All things considered, at the end of the day, it’s about being part of something greater than yourself and working alongside others to overcome huge challenges. “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life or do you want to come with me and change the world?” – Steve Jobs
